Completing the first incarnation of the Design Thinking (MT2542) course, four students from MSPI has presented their final projects. The students have been working together with local entrepreneurs in qHelf, who are exploring opportunities for preventive wellness.

About the project

Students: Yasmeen Jaghbeer, Saeid Taghavi, Yufeng Sun, Yonghao Yang

Program: MSPI

Course: MT2542 Design Thinking (2015)

Project problem: Office workers are not moving enough in their workdays

Solution: QMirror & QSensors

User needs focus

Based on their analysis of user needs, the student team has focused on developing solutions for the devoted office worker, who is dissatisfied with wearable technologies. The focus that the students hav been working on is how to change the behavior of office workers in the workplace.

Final prototype -qHelf QMirror & QSensors

For their final prototype, the students have presented a concept of how an office worker can be served with customized insights and feedback from their daily habits in the office place. Using an office chair equipped with QSensors, qHelf will be able to provide individualized feedback to the office worker in the QMirror, where they can see the long-term implications of their habits.

The vision of the provided service is that companies and staff will have access to a virtualized physician to provide insights and knowledge that allows them to improve their habits.

Prototype scenario

Below follows a video of the team’s final prototype scenario:

There are different topical interests that can be pursued throughout the programme, via projects and collaborations. You constantly mix up sustainability, innovation, and product-service systems thinking in a Design Thinking way.

Design for Wellbeing

Design for Wellbeing redirects the focus of product development from technology-based development, via needs-based development, to participative product development and innovation. By adapting a multidisciplinary approach, involving health sciences and engineering disciplines, we are able to manage the entire development cycle from an initial understanding of users’ needs to studies of finished products in use. In this thematic area the students get to work in a mode close to health and technology. For example together with County Council of Blekinge for healthcare, or Blekinge Health Arena for health technology and sports. The field is closely related to the Applied Healthcare research field at BTH.

Advanced Engineering

In the advanced engineering track the focus is on frontline technology innovation with a high focus on engineering ideation, creation, analysis and development. Here you might work close to our classic manufacturing industries with their frontline products. Examples being GKN Aerospace Engine Systems, Volvo Construction Equipment, Dynapac Compaction Equipment, and Volvo Trucks to mention some.

Sustainability

In the sustainability track the focus is on the sustainability of solutions and how to develop solutions that are ecologically, economically and socially sustainable, while they still deliver new values. Here you might support the development of new sustainable lighting solutions, as with collaborating partner Auralight, or look at sustainability improvements of products. The Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development is deployed to ensure sustainable solutions

Innovation

In the innovation track it is all about creating innovation and value and here the focus is on innovation capability; how do you deploy innovation capabilities, train people, manage innovation, drive radical innovation projects while keeping balance with incremental developments. Value creation is at the core, and possibly this can be further developed together with, for example, Volvo Construction Equipment like in their quest for deployment of global innovation coaches to inspire global innovation.

The MOVE framework is designed to help you plan an effective internal workshop to address the innovation capabilities within your group or company.

MOVE Workshop Facilitation Handbook
MOVE Workshop Facilitation Handbook

Make, Observe, Visualize, Engage

The framework is based on four dimensions of team innovation: Make, Observe, Visualize, and Engage.

MOVE dimensions
Make, Observe, Visualize, Engage

We talk about dimensions rather than phases because innovation is not a linear process. Use elements of each dimension depending on your specific needs and objectives. Don’t forget to iterate and share your evolving ideas with others in your innovation network, which will help you move your big ideas forward.

MOVE based on Stanford and DARPA experience

The MOVE Workshop that is now available to MSPI and partners is based on a combination of findings from academic research at the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Stanford University, Lund University (Andreas Larsson) and Blekinge Institute of Technology (Tobias Larsson), merged with the facilitators’ extensive hands-on workshop experience with a range of industry (e.g. aerospace, automotive, telecommunications), nonprofit, and government groups.
