Meet Babak Nemat, who is in his first year of the Sustainable Product-Service System Innovation master’s program.

meet Babak Nemat
Babak Nemat

Who are you?

My name is Babak Nemat.

Where do you come from?

I come from Tehran in Iran.

Where did you do your bachelor degree?

I graduated as an Industrial Designer from Azad University, Tehran – Iran

Why did you choose MSPI and BTH?

There is a famous quote “a butterfly’s wings can cause the tornado”. Perhaps many of us perceived it as overrating and a few assumed it as a true fact, when MSPI courses puts that theory into practice and prove that each of us could be effective and helpful in keeping our earth’s resources safer, eliminate industries’ footprint, or reducing societies’ negative impact on its nature and highlight universal consequences cause by ignoring those principles, despite of our small scale in front of our planet.

From another standpoint, some concepts such as Design, Innovation, Sustainability, and Services are not distant from our ordinary lives; unlike they’re impartible of that and become fairly tangible during this course. Introducing the “Design Thinking” method into this year’s course is another example, as made it more similar to Product and Engineering design experiences from my perspective.

Moreover I have some friends among MSPI alumni, whom work currently as researchers in BTH and Lund universities and they all recommended this course to me and explained its possible advantages.

In the meantime, BTH is well known because of its close cooperation with industries as a pioneer in Sustainability in the world and Sweden has the highest rate in this matter across all countries, which both provide a special understanding together with the vast experience into the MSPI course provide by BTH.

How are you finding the MSPI experience and your time at BTH so far?

Delightful and Insightful indeed! as far as I notice, BTH is the only University in Sweden that tries to apply “Design Thinking” methods into MSPI course, inspired from Stanford University and its close relationship by manufacturers that gave me chance to having a real communication with some of them (Atlas Copco & ABB company) during the last projects. Things become more interesting while you surrounded by an international environment, students and staffs that spontaneously expand your social ties, beside of that friendly relationship between master- student and their supportive attribute, all in all captivated me truly.

What has been your favorite course so far, and why?

I can point out two of them, the “Value Innovation” and “KEE” (Knowledge Enable Engineering) courses, their contained academic topics, renew and in some parts re-build my former knowledge that I gained from industrial design. We had a lot discussions about; Needfinding, Value proposition, PLM, PDM processes, Social media, Design assessment, Data mining and many others attractive issues that completely change my perspective about product development and which gave me a better insight for making decisions and how to approach real projects by the knowledge obtained. Of course, we had extra activities beside of those lessons, mostly blending with fun.

Definitely my master Marco Bertoni who taught both courses had a critical role in keeping those topics attractive and interactive all the time. His positive attitude, clever suggestions and enthusiasm to teaching and listening to you simultaneously, persuaded me to follow the whole courses with more interest and I’m eagerly looking forward to have another class with him again.

MSPI features many projects and project courses, which project are you most proud of?

My project for “Wearable Technology” that was conducted during the Knowledge Enabled Engineering course. It was a group project and challenging indeed because there were no obvious boundaries, except from our experiences or knowledge.

Our group chose the sport Rugby as our main field of activity and figured out how we can decrease the concussion rate cause in this sport.

We needed to get familiar with using different sensors and other electronics stuff, computer programming, and 3D printing to accomplish our stated goals, but finally we had this opportunity to launch the concept, tested it in reality, and obtained valuable feedback to hopefully improve it for the future.

The key areas for the program are Sustainable development, Product-service systems and Innovation. How do you think engineers can benefit from mastering these perspectives?

Moving toward sustainable society contain vast challenges in global and local perspectives, and using this approach would be really helpful if we could find a rational way to implement its rules into different levels of industry. Especially at a primary stage, when many companies might be aware about possible advantages that Sustainability and PSS can provide for them, but at the end of the day there are many restriction to apply that knowledge. Hence, I think discovering new ideas, having deeper research and collaboration with manufacturers in order to make this implementation process logical, could resolve existing gaps between academic and industrial areas and promise future benefits for both sides.

Why is this essential for companies to take these views into consideration?

Today market pressures are increasing constantly, not only by former rivals, but also from new arriving companies that were not observed before. Companies must be flexible and adaptive to survive during the time when consumer expectations and public awareness about global warming and environmental issues are arising from the other side.

Meanwhile product-service systems provide a promising opportunity – base strategy by focusing on client’ needs unlike the other problem- solving strategies and mainly comes with less material solutions to satisfy consumers because of its connection with sustainability.

This is a stepwise development and can be applied exclusively for each company, and mainly relies on innovative ideas. Hence, by taking this action companies can hit several targets with one shot. Finally this process application needs plenty of time for ideation, development, testing and receiving feedback from main customers and time is a landmark through marketing competition; so “the sooner the better”.

What is the main challenge in this field in the future?

Nowadays acceleration of technology improvements has changed people’s life style and their consumption patterns. Accordingly so has their expectations from products and how company may offer its services to them. It’s predictable that present rate will increase even more in the future.

Perhaps more research will be needed to matching current insight with technology development rates, because virtual reality usage spread rapidly across society’s surface when major part of current PSS experiences depend on physical objective products.

Babak Nemat
Babak Nemat

What do you see as essential developments for society relating to this field in the future?

Perhaps, population control, decreasing natural resources degradation especially clean water as critical element for life, discovering proper substitute and effective ways for recycling. Since human society development mainly will follow by expanding people’s demands and the resources should meet those demands are not infinite.

Then for everyone who looking for a sustainable future, it’s essential to consider this knowledge as a serious matter beyond academic practice and enhancing their solidarity with this part more than before.

How would you like change the program for the better?

There are many scope exist regard to Product service-system innovation and our project’s focus were on sustainability and innovation so far, hence I’m willing to know more about service’s function and those elements that influence it’s result, directly or indirectly; such as marketing, advertisement, service design methods or bazar analyzing because creativity in this part will not be possible without having an enough recognition about those issues, and I hope MSPI course planning makes those concepts touchable for me through remaining time.

What would recommend to future students interested in these topics?

Human needfinding and Innovation are fundamental elements of MSPI course which means; you have to discovering untapped parts of human knowledge and its experiences, so obviously further than academic methods.

As a complement course I strongly recommend it for industrial-Product designer and any relative courses because of its potential to presenting new rooms for discussion, according to personage of each ones.

What would be your dream job after graduating from MSPI?

I had my own design company once, then it will be exciting to launch it again with a new perspective on product-service development as a designer or consultant. Moreover, I am always looking for opportunities to pursue my education at a higher level such as a PhD, as I found this procedure attractive and challenging indeed among Sweden’s universities.

What do you see yourself doing in 5 years from now?

It’s hard to predict right now, nonetheless my ultimate desire will be reinforcing my design experience by applying PSS knowledge and use them both in my future carrier, regardless to the place I’ll be in.

Next up in our exposé of the current breed of MSPI students, we meet Saeid Taghavi. Saeid is in the final year of the Master’s program in Sustainable Product-Service System Innovation.

Who are you?

My name is Saeid Taghavi

Where do you come from?

I come from Iran.

Where did you do your bachelor degree?

I did my bachelor degree in mechanical engineering program in Azad University in Iran.

Why did you choose MSPI and BTH?

I found MSPI program interesting since it is a project-based program in which you can challenge with interesting topics. I also talked with my friends who already had been in this program in BTH which led me finally to choose this program in BTH.

How are you finding the MSPI experience and your time at BTH so far?

I found MSPI experience as a complement to my previous studies in mechanical engineering since what I have learnt so was mostly dealing with academic assignments, formula, simulations which were focusing on specified problems but now in MSPI I had the chance to get an overview of running different projects and see the big picture. I also must say that sustainability courses were a good and interesting experience I had in this program.

What has been your favorite course so far, and why?

My favorite course was Design Thinking since it was basically the first time I had the chance to experience the whole process of a PSS project from initiation to implementation in this program. There were also other courses such as the Strategic Management for Sustainability in which I could have such experience but those courses were focusing mostly on sustainability and not on PSS.

The key areas for the program is Sustainability/sustainable development, Product-service systems and Innovation. How do you think engineers can benefit from mastering these perspectives?

The value which is inherently embedded in product development is something that every engineer should consider.

What is the main challenge in this field in the future?

It is going to be finding a good job.

What do you see as essential developments for society relating to this field in the future?

I think sustainability is the topic which is going to be more focused in general in next years.

How would you like change the program for the better?

I would like to have more projects focusing on mechanical engineering since the program description is bringing up this field as a kind of perquisite for the MSPI-program, so I expect to have the program projects more focused on this in general.

What would recommend to future students interested in these topics?

I recommend them to prepare themselves for an interesting program which can be helpful for them to get prepared for their future professional lives.

Continuing to meet the students in MSPI. Now we meet Yonghao Yang, who is in his final year of the MSPI programme.

Where do you come from?

I come from Shanghai, China.

Where did you do your bachelor degree?

I did my bachelor in Shanghai polytechnic university and BTH. It is an exchange student programme. So I have bachelor degree in both school.

Why did you choose MSPI and BTH?

The fourth year of my bachelor, I come to Sweden as an exchange student. By then, I travelled a lot, and I always have a question in my mind. Why most of the European countries are developed countries. And some of them are considered as the most developed countries in the world. But the people live in there are somehow “lazy” for me. They don’t really work so much and they don’t really master some extraordinary skills. Compared with them, students and workers in China works day and night. They struggled every day to improve themselves. I always wondering what caused this. I think I have some clue about this problem.

The problem is not about how advanced the technology is. Technology can be easily learned and implemented. The essential part is the system. What I saw here is, the school is closely connected with the company, suppliers are closely connected with the manufacturer, and each part is supporting another part in a way. Different from the pure technology, the system need generations to transform. In my country, we don’t lack of good engineers. That is why I chose the MSPI. I want to be the one guild the system and develop it into a virtuous cycle.

Yonghao Yang
Yonghao Yang

How are you finding the MSPI experience and your time at BTH so far?

The experience in MSPI studying is totally different from the studying experience I had before.

The campus is beautiful and cosy, the lessons are not so difficult. The most different experience here is that all the theory is teach with practice. There are plenty of projects that student can test their skill.

What has been your favourite course so far, and why?

I cannot remember the course name. But there are some concepts I find interesting. First is the sustainability. This is a new concept for me, and it is also a big challenge for my country. Second is the PPS concept of course, it is the main part of the program. I think the concept of PSS and the system under it can somewhat answer the question I mentioned above.

The key areas for the program is Sustainability/sustainable development, Product-service systems and Innovation. How do you think engineers can benefit from mastering these perspectives?

The importance of sustainability is very obvious I think. For the product-service system and innovation, I think it is a way to guild us to move towards success more strategic way

Yonghao Yang
Yonghao Yang

Why is this essential for companies to take these views into consideration?

As for me, the modern society is changing rapidly and those company will fail if they are not prepared enough for the challenge. Sustainability problem will have a huge impact for the industry that need the supply of the nature resources. And PSS is one way to reduce the impact of the sustainability problem. What more, it is a way to accommodate the company to the changing market. The traditional “produce and sell product” is becoming more and more difficult. And the PSS is a new marketing model.

What is the main challenge in this field in the future?

As far as I know, one challenge of this field is lacking of some detailed and well defined theory. It will be nice if we can have some quantitative measurements in this course. Take the example of sustainability. The basement of the sustainability concept is the sustainability principle I think. But I don’t really think that 8 principles well explained the concept. Do not systematically increasing the concentration of the substances extracted from the earth crust. But how much increase is systematically increasing, it is impossible to have zero extraction, and it is also pointless to say we reduce as much as we can. Everyone want to more towards sustainability will do it. What we really want is a strategic way to accomplish sustainability more efficient. So I think a mathematic model of the problem will be helpful. May be some study of the overall resource storage, and the usage per years. Quantify the result, so we can have a guild line to test what is real sustainability. How much effort the company or the society should make to be sustainable. For instance, if the fire generation station reduce their 90% of emission. They still contribute a lot to the air pollution. If we put anywhere a solar panel in a farm, it is expensive and does not really make any difference. The farm don’t have much pollution at first place. I think there is or there should be a value of threshold as the goal we want to step over. The research should be done and teach to the student. Otherwise, whatever we do, it is just we think it will be sustainable. As for me, most of the time I don’t know how sustainable the idea is or is it sustainable at all. If we have the sustainability principles like a formula we can use, I think it will help a lot.

The same suggestion for PSS as well. If a company wish to implement PSS, to how much extent service-oriented the company should be to have a better result. I think it will be helpful if there is research study all the company implemented the PSS concept, and analysis their performance. Analysis the outcomes and risks. Generate the value of expectation. Then we have a better vision of the result of PSS.

Yonghao Yang
Yonghao Yang

In your opinion, what is the most important thing the education programme should focus on? Why?

As for me, the education programme should clearly know what is the role their student going to be in the society. As a researcher or a worker. The teaching method should be different.

What would be your dream job after graduating from MSPI?

I think I want to be a design team leader in product development department in a company.

What do you see yourself doing in 5 years from now?

I think I will be back to Sweden for my Nobel Prize towards Economics in Stockholm.  When I standing on the stage, I will say “thanks BTH for give me such opportunity to study PSS”. Of course this only happens if PSS or sustainability is categorize in economics.

What kind of hobbies and activities do you enjoy in your spare time?

In my spare time. I usually play a lot of games. Computer game, online game, video game. Also, I like reading, especially SI-Fi. I am writing my own novel as well. And sometimes some academic reports on the topic I interested in. for example, mathematic and physic. It is so much fun to test the scenario in the fiction or report using numbers and figures. And see how they changed my life view point.

Next up in our series of posts meeting the MSPI students, we will meet Muhammad Usman, who is in his first year of the MSPI program.

To provide some background to you as a person; Who are You?

I am Muhammad Usman

 Where do you come from?

I come from Gujrat, Pakistan

Where did you do your bachelor degree?

I done my Bachelor’s degree in Electrical engineering from HITEC University, Pakistan

Why did you choose MSPI and BTH?

When I was in Pakistan I used to observe the life style of people live in my surrounding. I noticed that we have all kind of facilities but we are not aware how to use them in a better way. Then I decided to do something innovative to make the things more comfortable for them and should provide them a platform where I can educate them well so they can also improve their lives and do take part to make societies more sustainable socially, economically and environmentally. So I talked to my Brother Nasir (who was working at BTH at that time and still working) that I want to do masters in that kind field where I could learn and explore about sustainable product-service systems and innovation. He said we have that program here at BTH. I applied and got admission at BTH.

Muhammad Usman
Muhammad Usman

How are you finding the MSPI experience and your time at BTH so far?

It’s been great. I met with some intellectual people here. I liked their way of teaching and most importantly they encourage the students to participate in workshops and industry visits. I have been worked with Dynapac Atlas Copco in a course project where I always been get in touch with company representatives, BTH staff members. They guide me at every moment. I observed they are too much cooperative when I need help.

What has been your favorite course so far, and why?

All the courses I studied so far gave me more knowledge than I expected but one course I liked more is Value Innovation. In that course, I learnt some basic tools such as Need finding, Customer value chain analysis, Customer journey map, Kano model while doing the project on the Small Asphalt Compactor CC1000 with Dynapac Atlas Copco.

MSPI features many projects and project courses, which project are you most proud of?

I have been done several course projects. I obtain bundles of knowledge from these projects. The final assignment in the Strategic Sustainable Development course I did with ‘Gylles Lenarths’ Karlskrona is one of my favorite project. Actually, I have a business mindset so I found it very useful and also picked some interesting rules that will help me to flourish the business in future.

Have you attended any extra-curricular activities? What have you learnt from this participation?

I participated in kids BTH Competition, International Day and Welcome Party by BTH. It was great fun over there and I enjoyed a lot and most importantly I met with new people and made contacts with them.

The key areas for the program are Sustainability/sustainable development, Product-service systems and Innovation. How do you think engineers can benefit from mastering these perspectives?

As we all know the issue of global warming is arising day by day and because of that we are facing very serious outcomes in the form severe diseases so we need to educate the world to overcome the problem. For that Sustainability and Product-service systems and innovation program can play a vital role to erode those severe problems. So engineers should focus on these courses they are the right person who can relate social and environmental problems with innovative solutions.

Why is this essential for companies to take these views into consideration?

Companies must address these issues and put them into their priority list. The best way to tackle the problems is to give awareness and educate all of us about their pros and cons. For that, they should arrange seminars, workshops for engineers, surveys all over the world and bring some innovative ideas to address that issues.

What is the main challenge in this field in the future?

As this field is related to Sustainable Product Innovation, so the main challenge is not just in the development and formulation of a sustainable strategy and vision, but in the implementation of this new strategy in real life. During the implementation process, the theoretical strategy needs to be translated into practice.

What do you see as essential developments for society relating to this field in the future?

There are several issues that should be highlighted and needs to be improved quickly. However, here I am going to talk about the poverty and to educate and give awareness to people. We need to eradicate poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty, are the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development. All countries and all stakeholders should collaborate with each other. We need to take the bold and transformative steps which are urgently needed to shift the world onto a sustainable and resilient path. We need to ensure that all human beings can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives and that economic, social and technological progress occurs in harmony with nature.

In your opinion, what is the most important thing the education programme should focus on? Why?

As I am in master’s course and my mainly objective is do more practical work than theoretical. Yeah theoretical is also important but you need to focus on more practical work like in each learning period, you should fix 3 to 4 weeks just for complete practical work. During that we should allowed to contact industries responsible persons directly and can discuss with them our project related work. I order to get more knowledge, we should have access to work with professionals for some time to groom own skills.

What would recommend to future students interested in these topics?

As I talked above about the issues we are facing socially and environmental related, I will encourage the newcomers please join us and lets together erode the problems by giving them innovative solutions. Everybody have skills to do something unique so I would recommend you come here, learn new things and let’s do some contributions for society and for our own future.

What are your expectations for the rest of your education? Say you’re sitting after your graduation celebrating your success, what did you achieve?

I am more like social person. I would prefer to get command on those techniques who are directly linked with common person e.g.  let’s suppose a person come to me and ask I am having trouble in some health issue, could you make a product for me that can sort out my problem. So at that time I must be in a position to develop that efficient innovative product by using the innovative tools. This is just the example to give you some understanding. There are several other expectations I have and will expect to fulfill them during my education here at BTH.

What would be your dream job after graduating from MSPI?

I would prefer to start my own business. However, after the completion of degree, I must need some experience so I will definitely do a job as a development engineer or may be as a consultant.

Muhammad Usman
Muhammad Usman

What kind of hobbies and activities do you enjoy in your spare time?

Usually I prefer to play badminton, Cricket and soccer. Sometime, I also read the biographies of successful entrepreneurs that really keep me motivate all the time to do something unique.

In a series of posts we’ll get acquainted with the current breed of MSPI students. First out, we’ll meet Xin Yi who is in her first year of the Master’s program in Sustainable Product-Service System Innovation.

Who are you?

I am Xin Yi.

Where do You come from?

I come from China where I did my bachelor degree before coming to BTH.

Why did you choose MSPI and BTH?

MSPI is a good and promising major, which help us understand what people’s needs then put up with various of innovation ideas, products and service to satisfied people and market’s needs, increase the interest of the business, also try reduce the environmental damage. I am very interest in it, so I choose this as my major. The reason why I choose BTH are firstly, I am interested in the major of MSPI. Secondly, two of my friends once been to BTH as exchange students stayed here for 1 year. They share their study and life experiences with me, and sounds very good and meaningful, so I decided to come here to continue my study.

How are you finding the MSPI experience and your time at BTH so far?

The experience of MSPI at BTH is awesome. In here I have learned many interesting courses, and at the same time I have chances to put what I learn into practice, as every course the teacher would give us different projects to choose to improve and consolidate the knowledge what we learned. Moreover, the teachers here are kind and approachable, if you have any problem you could communicate with them. In addition, the teaching facilities here are also wonderful, and I love BTH’s library.

What has been your favorite course so far, and why?

My favorite course is Value Innovation. It is my first course here, and the teacher Marco help me a lot. I still remember once time we do some class works, and I am not understand what he talked and everyone else start to their work, then he would talked to me slowly one more time and let me know what he talked and encouraged me. It impressed me a lot and I like his course.

Have you attended any extra curricular activities? What have you learnt from this participation?

Yes, I have attended many extra curricular activities. Such as international day, welcome fresh man party, culture adventure. I have make new friends, know their culture and a little bit of their language. But the most thing I have learned is respect every one’s culture and life style.

The key areas for the program is Sustainability/sustainable development, Product-service systems and Innovation. How do you think engineers can benefit from mastering these perspectives?

If an engineer master sustainability, product-service system and innovation, she will be a comprehensive people, as sustainability is the need of human society, with the development of the society, people’s attention are increased a lot in this area. So an engineer should keep sustainability in mind. Moreover, produce-service and innovation is a trend of industry development, which do not like the past business model just pay attention to the physical product, it attach more importance to the service to meet people and society’s needs. So in a bird’s eyes view, it will push forward human society with less pollution and from the person’s perspective, an engineer master these perspectives will be more competence.

Why is this essential for companies to take these views into consideration?

If a company want to maintain the vitality of enterprises and not to be outdone, they should keep sustainability and product-service innovation in mind.

Xin Yi
Xin Yi

What is the main challenge in this field in the future?

The main challenge is the concept of sustainability. As not all the people have this concept. The more people awareness of the importance of sustainability the more sustainable we could arrive. In the world especially in some developing country people do not have this kind of realization. Take China as an example, in our university we do not have this kind of course, and I have search other universities, less universities in China have the similar courses like here. College students are the hope of the future, if they do not have their concept, it would be hard to promote sustainable. If we want to the sustainable could be the global sustainable, we should allow more people know these concepts and how know they should do.

What do you see as essential developments for society relating to this field in the future?

If the society do not care about sustainability, and people continue to misuse of our resources just for earn more money, and it will result in bad effects and vicious circles. When one day the resources are exhausted what we could rely on? So we should rational use of resources.

In your opinion, what is the most important thing the education programme should focus on? Why?

The most important thing the education programme should focus on is to ensure what students learned are indeed need in our society and maybe school could give us more chance to go to real companies to visit or give us a short time to allow us find an internship in our interested company to understand what we are lack of and the enterprise are needed.

How would you like change the program for the better?

Our program is name sustainable product-service system innovation. Maybe it could be divided into two part, and the students choose their more interested part to have specific courses. One part the students graduated they could work is in R&D department to put innovate ideas to improve the product and attract more customers. The second part, the students would pay more attention on business model for a company to guide the company go further in a sustainability perspectives.

What would recommend to future students interested in these topics?

Final prototype -qHelf QMirror & QSensors

For their final prototype, the students have presented a concept of how an office worker can be served with customized insights and feedback from their daily habits in the office place. Using an office chair equipped with QSensors, qHelf will be able to provide individualized feedback to the office worker in the QMirror, where they can see the long-term implications of their habits.

The vision of the provided service is that companies and staff will have access to a virtualized physician to provide insights and knowledge that allows them to improve their habits.
